A Dinner Invitation……

There was a time, not to many years ago, when it was considered a great way to spend a Saturday evening.  Yep, invitations went out to friends and neighbours to join us (or them) for small get togethers.  Thought would be given to the menu and wine selected.  The table would be dressed (well maybe not quite as grand as the one above)  and hosts and guest would dress up for the occasion.  It was informal but smart and conversation flowed.

Mind you in those days, it was also considered normal for the family to eat together at the dinning table.

Life has changed.  Listening to conversations, the habit of dressing down, lap top meals with the TV watching the feast, Beer out of the bottle or can, never a glass, Prosecco the only wine and Take-Aways the real treat.

I guess that’s progress.. and I know I am getting old

Just a thought…. and here is another

Silent Sunday….. Maybe Not !

Bedruthan Steps, Cornwall

Bedruthan Steps are barely a handful of miles, as the Sea Gull flies, from where the Premier Leaders of our Global World have been meeting for the G7.  It strikes me that much is choreographed ahead.  Maybe that is as well, or maybe not.  Many of us have experienced those meetings where individual ego and rivalry mix with intractable opinion.  Often we questioned… ‘Did we achieve anything’

Not sure if the political decision making, over the World, has been clear and decisive over this past year or so. This at the very time when we did need positive leadership for these tough times.  I rather fear that delay has lead to many poor decisions being made.

Any critical comment is derided as that of hindsight.  Of course we should always reflect back on our achievements and the failures, then learn the lessons for the future.

Never the less,  good management also requires clear forward thinking, anticipating the problems, positive decision making and acting quickly to tackle the issue and other that may arise.  Expect the unexpected.

Being cynical…..  Maybe, those at the G7, would achieve more by a walk along this beach.  More perhaps than sat around a Conference Table, each Delegate trying to ensure that the right personal sound bite is reported by the hovering Media hawks.  At least on the Beach….  there would be the bonus of some real fresh air for clear thinking heads, with only the Sea Gulls to hear their elite thoughts.

In Need of Care and Attention…..

A dark and neglected corner of the village….much in need of some care and attention.  It might be  tumbling down but somehow it is still a interesting and mysterious space.

In Town Today…… So Quiet

This mornings Lockdown exercise took Buster and I into Town for a change (walking on muddy fields and paths had become a bit of a chore)…..  and it did make a pleasant change. It was quiet, and that alone is a novelty for Derby, and we could walk without having to take avoiding action when meeting the occasional fellow walker.  Add sunshine and even the modern, stark Hotel Tower looked rather grand.

A much smaller hostelry (obviously closed at the moment) is the Old Silk Mill

The real Silk Mill is situated adjacent to the Inn.  One of the original mechanised industrial revolution Mills, one of several in this World Heritage Location.

In recent years, it has had a chequered and uncertain museum history.  Right now it is undergoing major renovation and the creation of a new museum (thanks to lottery money).  Exterior restoration is near completion and by the noises from within work continues at a pace.

It was here, in 1833 that a Lockout of the Mill Workers occurred.  It lasted till 1834.  As a result of this action the foundations of the Labour Movement were set in motion. A mural on the side of the Inn is a reminder of those trouble times…

Troubled times continue today.  Today it is the challenges of  CV19 and Lockdown restrictions.  As we are now finding out there are folk that are not coping.  I found it very sad, that along this bridge leading to Sant Mary’s Church, notices have been a fixed,  messages of hope, for those who are perhaps contemplating taking drastic action.

Travel…. is it a thing of the past?

The Heritage Steam Engine ‘The Sir Nigel Gresley’  arriving in Goathland Station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

A goliath of Railway power from a long gone era. Travel was just becoming accessible to a wider population.  Now , fast-forward a century, and you do wonder just what travel will be like, what restrictions will remain, once we pass through this Covid Crisis.

Whatever the future holds, for now…..
