Well the area is great for exploring… and all the main locations have easy access. But Magpie Mine I usually incorporate in a longer walk taking in Monsal Dale, the old railway tracks and other aspects of Derbyshires industrial heritage… Makes me π€ very aware just how populated the area once was
Yep, the whole line is a trail . The stations are used for various activities and all the tunnels are now open. Plans afoot by Peak Rail to extend there line from Rowsley northwards and to the south eventually joining up with the Great Central Railway (not sure that is at all feasible….but they hope π
Do you know why it’s called Magpie mine? It sounds rather intriguing. π
It’s a fantastic place and the building could become a great Holiday Let for two, maybe three small lets? Away from ‘the world’… No cellphone, no tablets… now’t but the sounds of nature.
Hi…I did reply earlier but it seems lost in the ether. Well if you wanted to turn these buildings into a holiday let you would have to first evict the current owners. It is the Derbyshire Lead Mining Association HQ. They use it as store and weekend accommodation plus some visitor info. They are usually off exploring one or more of the many mine shafts in the area….so maybe you could sneak in whilst they are down a mine!
Oh, what a sight! The sort of place I would love to see, but my walking days are over, alas….

Not sure how mobile you are…but you can park very near the mine and it is only a very short walk on a good track.

For a once busy place it is peaceful, but also has that feeling that it is still alive…the spirits from the past are all there π
