Under the Spreading Chestnut Tree
Sunshine but also shadows, often dark and damp…… well that has been, for the most part, the weather this July. August tomorrow and we move that little bit nearer to autumn. Yet, here under the Chestnuts leafy canopy, last autumns fallen leaves still abound….. true they do add some extra colour to the woodland glades.
But less of this talk of autumn, lets hope August is this years summer month.

What a magnificent tree. Is this one that produces edible chestnuts? There was a beautiful horse chestnut on the campus of my grade school, next to the archived smithy building, but the nuts weren’t edible. I loved that tree and got lost in the deep, rich color of the nuts, once their spiky green husks had split. I still love that color.

This is the none edible Horse Chestnut tree. Its fruit or nuts are known as Conkers. Yu may have heard of the game that kids of all ages love to play. After a discovery trail to collect conkers they drill a hole through the middle. Attach a piece of string and then play a ‘knock out’ game with the conkers to see who’ has the best and strongest conker 🙂 There are national championships too !

No, I’ve not heard of that. It sounds like something from a Monty Python episode.

Yes, that explains it most adequately. And to think we’ve never heard of that. It does, however, seem to carry with it a potential for some rather painful bruising…

Just one hazard….. but riding a bike can be a hazard too!!! 🙂 The main fun I always though was hunting for the conkers in the first place

My main memory is the immensely-deep and rich color, and it remains one of my favorites.
