Mere is easy…it is another old English name for a lake (any size). As far as I recall the Butter part is a derivation of an old Norse name of Buthar. Buthar’s Mere. there are lots of names in that part of the country that owe their routes to the Norse ‘invaders’!. There is also a village on lakeside that is named after the Lake… Buttermere
