Castlerigg Stone Circle, Keswick, Cumbria
The megalithic Stone Circle at Castlerigg, high on the Cumbrian Fells, are always a draw for tourists to the Lake District. They can then play the Castlerigg game of “count the stones”.
There is the suggestion that every time you count them you get another number. Some say 38, others 42 whilst those who are supposed to know say 40. So if you are in travelling in the area…. go on give it ago. (I have always got to 39)
Whilst the number of stones may be a challenge, it is also true that there is still many differing theories as to exactly why, and for what reason, the Stone Circle was built. One thing for sure is that we cannot ask the people who built it.
Counting stones or playing games today, as always
