Originally known, until1920, as Queenstown, Cobh is a town in County Cork. A town dominated by its Maritime history. Whilst its links to the sea are extensive, it is perhaps, as the centre for emigration to the Americas, that is the most dominant…. over 6 million Irish folk between 1844 and 1950 waved goodbye to their homeland. Nor can a visitor to Cobh miss the Titanic connection, Cobh being its last port of call before its dramatic loss at sea.
We arrived at dawn and departed as dusk fell. Our first visit, but I hope not the last. Built round a hill, a town crammed with colourful buildings, commerce and homes. A town also dominated by St. Coleman’s Cathedral with is dramatic spire. A Cathedral of significant importance to those leaving their home country for fresh starts across the seas, a place for a final prayer on home soil.
So here is a taster of our visit to Cobh from our dawn arrival to a last farewell as we pass Roche’s Point Lighthouse in the last rays of the setting sun.
Cobh … a place where memories have been made and are still being created…

My ancestors were from Cork and their name was Roche. Sadly the wife died in the famine and the rest of the family emigrated in the coffin ships to USA. A tragic history.

It’s a surprisingly colourful place isn’t it… If you ever get back there you should visit Spike Island out in the bay….
