12th Night has passed, the New Year is now well underway. Whilst we may yet have the worst of winters weather to come, the knowledge that Spring cannot be far away is encouraging.
The Oak tree above, known as the “Old Man of Calke” was roughly dated some time ago, as being well over 1000 years old.
It may only be a shadow of a once mighty Oak, but the knurled stump is still impressive. We have a certain fondness for this remarkable tree that keeps going despite the seasonal odds and anno domini. Whilst it always looks unlikely, each spring it sports a new head of leaves and eventually acorns. Every time we pass this way, we pause to pay our respects to the Old Man, pondering on just what this tree will have witnessed in its long life….. a silent historian.
Wherever you are, whatever your plans for the year ahead… as always…
