Fragile
News from Iceland this last weekend, of a highly likely major Volcanic Eruptions, evacuation of some areas and emergency watch. Must be frightening for those living there..
I recalled a visit to Iceland a few years ago to the Geyser area around the Strokkur area.
It was both exciting and an adventure also, if not frightening, certainly unnerving, all at the same time.
We were free to walk over this ‘creator’ area an area that was very much live below our boots. The picture above looks static, but is a very active hole to the center of the lava core of Iceland. Also wider than it looks. Vapour rising along with a noxious smell, bubbling masses rising spilling out and the heat intense. Maybe you can get a feeling of scale by seeing other folk exploring at the foot of the mountain ridge.
Whilst one moved with caution, you also knew that this was a volatile situation…. it was, as I mentioned unnerving, not sure of the power that lay just below our boots….. it was also exhilarating and an experience I can treasure.
We could travel on, back to safety. But well aware that Iceland is a volatile country, a country that will always ponder when the next big Volcanic Eruption will occur. Living with ( all be it with well monitored measurements) that constant threat.
Always, not IF, but where over this dramatic island and of course WHEN?
Wherever you are… as always….

Fascinating but not without dangers… Now Iceland is waiting with fear for what will happen with the vulcano.

It doesn’t matter how sophisticated their monitoring is, once unrest is felt below your home and community, you must be more than just worried

Beautiful but dangerous, yes. But the people are very calm about it, they were born into it. We were there just after the Krafla eruption and after Heimaey and Surtsey. It is fascinating how nature works. We have been there two times when Hekla was sending up smoke, I think it does that more or less all the time.
Great image.

Very true…they have for the most part tamed.the beast. Heating and power all natural.power. Those wisps of smoke are in their own way magical. Love Iceland… visits yes. Live there, not for me 😃
