Just Thinking…….

Hello Reykjavik

Just thinking…..  it was early morning, the sun just rising, the air so crisp and fresh, the sea calm, as we arrived in Reykjavik for an Icelandic Adventure.  It was exciting.

Even if one does try to be positive, I am not sure that Travelling will ever be quite the same for many years to come.

But at least that memory, along with many others, still seem as fresh and as stimulating as the days on which they were created….. and for all those memories and adventures, I am very grateful

Wordless Wednesday…….. Another Favourite Place

Godafoss, Iceland

Location:-    Godafoss Falls, Iceland.

When chasing memories, one place keeps surfacing to the very top of my list of all my favourite places……

The Godafoss Falls.  The Waterfall of the Gods, so named since 1000ad when a Nordic Chief threw an icon of a Nordic Pagan God into the waters of the falls…. well that is one of the legends, sounds OK to me, and as I wasn’t around at the time, I will believe it 🙂

Whatever you believe…….

Once upon a Time we made Plans…….

Evening as we left Isafjordur in Iceland.  It had been another grand day of discovery for us on our first tour of Iceland.   Like many folk used to travelling, we have over the past few months been wondering if we ever will get to go wandering again.   Despite the best efforts of our favourite cruise line, who assure us that there will be more happy days to come, tales of new ships, changed itineraries ready to drop into place….’sometime’ …. it all seems a little like fantasy to dream.

Hard to be positive, but without that ability to travel, near or far, without meeting new people, new cultures, new adventures, we will miss those opportunities to learn, to be stimulated.  Who knows what and when things will get back to some kind of normal, let alone days like the ‘Old Days’

Only glad we were able to make so many memories…

ICELAND….. A Country Divided.

Thingvellir National Park

You may be more familiar with scenes of Iceland’s Fjords, or Snow capped mountain ranges and of course the occasional Volcano. But perhaps here at Thingvellir National Park you get a view of what Iceland can look like in the summer…a chance to see the lush green vegetation, the rich green of the trees that seem reluctant to grow to any height (in fact we herd one guide telling his guest ….  that you can never get lost in an Icelandic Forest – if you do then just stand up and you will see over the trees)   You also can see where the green changes to the dark volcanic rock and on up to  snow topped mountains and icefields beyond.

Thingvellir also straddles the gap between the Pan-American and the Eurasian Plates.  In fact you can explore down into this gap which is widening every year.  Only, they reckon, by 2cm each year but they all add up.

The viewpoint I have chosen is also of historic Icelandic importance.  It is here in the outdoors, that the ‘Thing’ the name for their Parliament met every year from  930 until 1798.  It then moved indoors and based in Reykjavik.

I do wonder if we have made progress on the ‘Political Front’.  Just think if our Politicians had to meet outdoors…they may be more adept at making quick decisions.

Finally apologies.  My spelling of Thingvellir is the English adaption as my keyboard does have the appropriate characters to be true to the name

An Early Start……

It is Monday, a new week so lets make an early start to yet another week in Lockdown.

It was also a very very early start, around mid-summer, after a night when the sun never slept, when we arrived at Isafjordur on our Icelandic adventure.

It was so peaceful as we cruised up the Fjord, surrounded by snow capped mountains, with only the sound of seabirds as company, breathing in air that felt so fresh and clean…. it was therapeutic.

Another memory to brighten these strange times we are now managing…
