Sunday…. off to The Mountaineers Church

The Church of St. Olaf, Wasdale, Cumbria.

Surrounded by the highest mountains in Cumbria, is the valley of Wasdale, famous for Wastwater the deepest lake in England. At Wasdale Head, you can find hiding behind a hedge of tall Yew Trees this tiny Church.

Many walkers pass it bye without knowing of its presence.  Mountaineers over the centuries have a special affection, nestling as it does below Great Gable and Napes Needle,  for this a very special little Church.

The name of St,. Olaf was only bestowed on the Church in 1977. Why St. Olaf?  well that is a nod to the heritage of Wasdale and this area of Cumbria and its Norse heritage, reflected in many Norse name in the region.  It is believed there was a place of worship on this site in Norse times, but the first record of a church dates back to 1550.

The simple rustic beauty of St. Olaf’s is a reflection of its rustic mountain setting, at the head of dramatic Wasdale.
