Jeronimos Monastery, Lisbon
The impressive frontage of the 16th century Monastery dedicated to Saint Jerome, still welcomes visitors, even though it is no longer holds a Religious brief.
It now celebrates the long Maritime History of Portugal. It is from here in Lisbon, on the banks of the River Tagus, where many expeditions set sail, perhaps the most appropriate location. Maybe the Monastery is also so appropriate, as most, if not all of Portugal’s Maritime Adventurers had a Missionary purpose as well as one of discovery.
Pass though the arched portal and you are reminded of the buildings former religious heritage, all be it with a modern and very striking glass window.

The Maritime story of the ‘Navigators’, perhaps the most famous being Vasco da Gama, is told and illustrated in this museum.

Towards the end of the tour, you enter an extension, built to house the Royal Barges.

Equally as impressive as the frontage of the Monastery, is the very distinctive ‘Monument of Discoveries’….. big and bold but also skilfully detailed… the perfect way to celebrate the location on the Tagus from which so many set sail.
Daunting for those who set sail, to who knew where, true discoverers.
Maybe your Sunday is not as daunting… but even so, always….
