Once upon a time…long before ‘piped music’ shattered the silence of our shops. Long before phones and ear pieces providing endless music (if that is your style)…… there was the Organ Grinder.
A regular attraction on Victorian streets, a mini hand driven organ playing, what to us was, a rather tinny tune.
Invariably we are told The Organ Grinder also had a Monkey sat on the Organ as an added draw. A novelty for adults as well as children
Apart from the so called entertainment value, it also spawned a phrase. A Phrase that is still used at times today, when frustration kicks in, and one needs to speak to someone in authority….
” I want to speak to the Organ Grinder NOT the Monkey”
I think we have all experienced such moments…. though I have often thought it is rather disrespectful to many monkeys.
Just a thought for a Flippant Friday.
