St. Digain’s Church. Llangernyw, North Wales

High on the hills above the Conway valley is the small village of Llangernyw.  At is centre is this charming whitewashed Church dedicated to St Digain.  The history of the church dates back to the 5th century, when this ‘Cornish’ Saint came to live in the area.  The Cornish connection also extends to the village name.   Llan is a Welsh word for place, enclosure or church…. and in many cases the Llan would be the prefix to the Saints name.  This is an exception – it is thought that the name for Cornwall in Welsh is Cernyw. So the village was named as Llangernyw (or Village of the Cornishman).

St. Digain is celebrated in the church of his name with this coloured Glass Window.  The Church has been an important part of the community for generations and there are also other beautiful coloured glass adding to its charm…

The history and story of St. Digain’s does not end there.  For in the Church Yard there is a famous ancient Yew Tree.  This tree has been dated and recorded as being older than 4000 years (yes, I do mean 4000 years), the oldest in Wales and claimed to be one of the oldest living things in the world…
