Sortland Parish Church, Norway.
It is not quite 3 years to the day that we arrived in the Northern Norwegian town of Sortland. A quiet, colourful but unassuming town in the Vesteralen Region,
It was though the White Church, built on a slight rise on the edge of the town that captured out attention. A dominate white spire surround by vibrant autumn colour.
Sortland Parish Church is a wooden construction, in I guess a neo-gothic style, dramatic yet also welcoming.
The exterior may be white, but the interior is much more colourful. The skilful use of wood still dominates…but with a bold colour palette..
It is surprising that this Church was only built in the early 1900’s, built to replace an earlier wooden construction that was in poor condition.
In a very nice twist, the location of the earlier Church is marked by a restored version of that churches original Spire. A novel feature near to the town centre.
Sunday…. a day to relax and take stock of the week gone and of course the week ahead…. but as always….

I like the original spire of the old church but the new one is so beautiful. I was surprised by the red colors on the inside. That’s something we don’t see in our churches in Belgium.
