The West Window at Southwell Minster, Nottinghamshire.

Of the many Churches, Minsters and Abbey’s, I have shared with you, their painted or stained-glass windows have often been an attraction that has stood the test of time, sometimes centuries. Many of course having undergone skilful restoration. Their bold colours adding drama in telling their stories.

The West Window here at Southwell Minster is very different… dramatically different.

The window was installed in 1996 and replaced a plain glass window. It is the work of the late Master Stained Glass Artist Patrick Reyntiens OBE. No bold colours, but a muted palette of soft blues, yellows and greens, yet so clearly defining the intricate detail.  It may well be modern in concept but blends seamlessly with the older elements of the Minster.

Southwell Minster is not a new Minster. It is one steeped in history, often a violent history, having to withstand Civil Wars.  It has also had a troubled ‘structural’ past.  Fires, lightning strikes and some poor building standards, have seen the need for restorations as well as some rebuilds over the past centuries.  Whilst these have added some modern detail in style, much of the interior remains as it was

Sunday… in theory a day to relax.  Unless of course you need to work or are out pursuing some energetic activity…. no matter what…. as always….
