Saint Tudno’s Church, Great Orme, Llandudno

High on the sea facing side of the Great Orme above Llandudno is this rather delightful church, originally established by Saint Tudno in the 6th century.

Legend has it that Saint Tudno landed on the cliffs below the Great Orme, Lived in a cave we are told.  He then built the first Christian Church, which was believed to be mainly of wood. Later in the 12th century it was replaced by a Stone construction.   It was enlarged in the 15th century to its current (still diminutive) size.  Age has also demand restoration against deterioration at various times since then.  It is also so pleasing that this tiny Church is still cared for. So step inside for a brief tour…

The Churchyard and the Graveyard extension, here high above the Cliffs has obviously been the place to be laid to rest, by Llandudno residents, over the centuries (and for historians lots of ancient stones to read)… and it does have a rather special atmosphere about it….

It is also here, outside the Church, that  something, whilst not exactly unique, but certainly rare takes place.

Every Sunday, when the the weather is not hostile, the Sunday Service takes place alongside Saint Tudno’s.  A Stone Alter and Lectern are in place and surrounded by benches for the assembled congregation.

They say precious gems come in small packages – and this is a real Gem.

There is one more fact that I found interesting.  The Great Orme was for centuries a hazard for shipping.  So it is said a lighted candle was placed in one of the Church windows as a warning light for shipping.  Progress of course dictated that the new large lamps in a Lighthouse be constructed..  It was built on the side of the Orme below the Church.  Then in another move of progress the Great Orme Lighthouse was decommissioned. Its lamp housing can be found in the Visitor Centre on the summit of the Orme.  Just imagine the comparison between a candle and this powerful lamp….
