Saint Martins Church, Cumbria
Tucked away high in the Cumbrian valley of Martindale. Rugged in construction of local stone and simple is style both outside and within. It is thought that this building dates back to the 16th century. Like so many religious building it was erected on an earlier religious site….. records indicate that a church was located here back in 1220ad.
A stone flagged floor and simple benches keep the interior as simple as the exterior.

Martindale can be found up a narrow track leading up from How Town by Lake Ullswater. It is a true Cumbrian location, high fells, upland sheep farms, and a feeling of having stepped into another very quiet place.
It is also a place where weather can and does change quickly…. but even after a Lake District downpour, when the sun breaks through once more, St. Martins will puts on its bright face again..

St. Martins still celebrates Evensong, but that is restricted to one Sunday a month from May till the end of August.
St. Martins is also referred to by some as ‘The Old Church’. There is a more modern church just above How Town.
Enjoy your Sunday wherever and whatever you do…. and as always
