A “Bargain Buy” of mixed Summer Flowering bulbs. 8 of the mix were labelled as Acidanthera. Never planted those before and the name didn’t trip of the tongue.
Waited all summer, watching some short thin leaves, just a little disappointed…. then those short leaves extended into long thin stems about 18 inches tall. Several weeks later and still nothing appeared to be happening. The yesterday morning a white tightly closed bud appeared.
This morning that bud opened to produce a marvellous gem of a flower.
I Googled the name and it tell me it is also known as the Peacock Orchid or the Abyssinian Gladiolus.
Not a bad surprise and a bargain in the end…but out of 8, I would hope we have more to come.
