It was both a surprise and a treat to discover the “Burning Man” Sculptures currently on view at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire.
Their home is the Black Rock Desert in Navada, USA and have been part of an annual participatory Art event known as the “Burning Man”. No doubt many of our American followers will know more about the event than I.
Even though Chatsworth House is in the background it is difficult to appreciate the scale of the head… so here are two images that may help…
Stand back and view as part of the wider landscape the size appears to shrink… so one can only image their scale in the expanse of the Black Rock Desert ?
But our visit to Chatsworth was for walk in the Parkland and to explore Edensor Village.
The views both to and from the House are rather magnificent. So much so that in the 1800’s the 6th Duke of Devonshire had a village that could be seen from the House …moved. That village is called Edensor (pronounced enza) and was rebuilt less than half a mile from its original location, but importantly hidden from any observers at the House.
Nor was the rebuilding of the village skimped in any way. The houses and cottages were rebuilt in a mix of styles from Tudor to Swiss. Edensor also incorporates the Estate Church of Saint Peter that stands high overlooking the village.
The walk back to the House takes you over a bridge spanning the River Derwent and past Queen Marys Bower…
It is from here that one gets a view another of the Buring Man Sculptures…. a Giant Bird not of a specie usually spotted on the Chatsworth Estate
Big and scarry, but didn’t seem to disturb these snoozing Lambs, getting bigger but still in need of 40 winks on a hot day..
Reluctantly we left the Lambs and the House in peace and headed back to our more humble home…
