Ascension Day…… and a Pagan Custom

Today the 21st of May is Ascension Day, a key date in the Christian calendar.  Prior to it being adopted by the Church it was an important date and event in the Pagan year.   Today would also  mark the start of the Derbyshire Well Dressing Season.

The Pagan belief was in the  need to ‘Bless’ the life giving purity of the waters from these natural springs and wells in the villages.   A need for purity that may ring rather true today.

Tissington village would in a normal year be packed with people, both for the Blessing of the Village Wells by Church Leaders.  Then a Procession round to each Well.

It is quite a spectacular. Sadly in these trouble times this cannot happen.  So I have cheated and adding two links to todays page.  They recap  visits  in earlier happy times.  Take a look at this rather unique event.

I hope you find the tradition interesting 🙂

Mixed Fortunes……. (or Sods Law)

After a day when the skies had been gin clear blue,  just as expectations of a clear view of the Super Moon looked good….we get cloud cover.  Though we did get a small break in the clouds. Cannot win all the time.

It was a nice start to the day, sunshine over the Lake…

In the meadows and hedgerow things are growing fast.  Campion, Buttercups, Forget me Not, Hawthorn and Dandelions, now just seed heads.

Back in the garden it does look as if the weekend is going to be busy..

We also had some company.  This Blackbird was doing its best pretending not to be there.

As it had just been bathing in our birdbath I guess it was reluctant to have its photo taken….’bad hair feather day’

Cold but Sunny ……

Stanton Moor, Derbyshire

After what has seemed endless grey days of rain it is so nice to see a clear blue sky and sunshine. Still cold…. but the wind has dropped so that sun has a chance to warm the bones.

Whilst we are a little way off the Spring Equinox, I guess we can take some encouragement that the Meteorological Office insist that March 1st was the official  start of Spring.

A Fun Day Yesterday……well for the youngsters it was a bit of Horsing around!

Our eldest Granddaughter Hayley has always been horse mad…so no surprise that our Great Granddaughter Esmee ( now 19 months old) would follow in her mums hoof steps. Now Esmee thought it time that Ewan should start to appreciate the joys of horses – mucking out, riding and brushing.   All in all a fun day, new experiences and perhaps a new horseman in the making….

Then once Mystery, such a placid horse was back in his paddock, it was time for Ewan to return the learning experience and teach Esmee the fun of the slide….

Even so I guess Esmee like her mum still prefers Horses 🙂
