A very venerable Oak, known as the Furlong Oak. It has seen off another winter, just one of several hundred in its lifetime. Small bright green leaves are starting to grow and looking forward to another summer.
For the past few weeks, Bluebells have welcomed in the spring. Breaking through the covering of last autumns leaf carpet, desperate to flower before the trees cast their dark canopy to restart the natural life and death cycle of the woodlands.
Today, their colour is starting to fade, and foliage fall back…. but still a cheerful reminder that spring is progressing and eventually summer will arrive.
Woodland Rhododendron are now starting to flower, maybe just a little early. Meanwhile Crab-Apple Blossom is starting to show… most of our other Spring Blossoms have gone or are fading fast.
As for the woods themselves…. each day they get darker as the canopy cover increases. Dark it maybe but it is still full of the song of happy birds retuning from their warmer winter homes.
The weekend approaches, a time to relax for many….. but as always…
