It was a hot July day and Jean, Buster and I had set out on a walk along part of the South West Coastal Path, the English Channel on one side, Cornish countryside the other and Plymouth Sound in the distance, our destination. We had seen a ruin marked on our map at Rame Head, a cliff top that has over the centuries proved to be the perfect ‘look out point’.
We were not expecting to find this desolate Chapel. Dedicated to Saint Michael it is today just a shell…. but a shell that still retains a spiritual feeling of peace and of course solitude. I understand that on this spot in the Iron Age there was a Hill Fort, more than likely as it is the perfect vantage point. Later a Hermitage was established then by 1397 the Chapel established and its Saintly dedication. (I also think, but not sure, that Rame Head was a Coastal Look out point during WWII)
Isolated but not a lonely spot. High on a cliff and surrounded on 3 sides by turbulent water it may be…. but a perfect place to sit and restore calm and some energy on a long walk before heading off to the Ferry across Plymouth Sound.

A moment for thought
That hot July day was some years ago. The Chapel, and of course Buster who is no longer with us, remain a very strong memory.
This Sunday as everyday…always….
