Sunday…Off to Church

Saint Giles Church, Hartington, Derbyshire

Looking for a church for this week, St. Giles popped out of the archives. So I guess fate suggested this for the week.

Hartington is a small Derbyshire village and St. Giles stands on a hill on its outskirts, an idyllic location. It dates back to the 12 century and like other churches of similar age, has been built on an earlier religious site.  St. Giles’s importance to the village is demonstrated by the care exercised to make it a welcoming environment in the 21st century.

St. Giles also boasts some spectacular Coloured windows, windows worthy of any Cathedral… let alone a humble village Church

Visitors must also look up to high walls near the entrance. here you will find wall paintings…. this was once common in English Churches. but white washed to hide them from disapproving authorities.

You can ponder of the wisdom to hide such church décor… but also play detective to read the significance of such emblems.

St. Giles is a Derbyshire Village Church  well worth a visit…

A new week ahead, an important Christmas week… Relax if yiou can… and as always…

Please Remember ….
