SORTLAND, Nordland, NORWAY
Once upon a time there was indeed a Church (or Kirke in Norwegian) in this very spot. Sadly the Church had deteriorated and in 1900 it was decided a new church was needed… and by 1902 a brand new Church opened. The Church serves the community of Sortland, Norland in northern Norway.
But the site of the old Church is commemorated with this rather unique construction. Simple in design but incorporating the old Church Spire and Church Bell… now surrounded by a small community parkland, a tranquil place.
As for the new Church. It is located about half a mile away, also in calm surroundings and visible on every approach to Sortland. With its white timber, slated tall spire and topped with a weather vane, it makes a dramatic statement.

Sortland (new) Kirke in autumnal surroundings.
Autumnal colours are slowly creeping in whilst the year move along at a relentless pace…
so maybe we all need to…
