St. Wystan’s Church, Repton, Derbyshire
I have passed his church for more times than I can count, strange that I have never stopped to explore… after all you cannot fail to see the 212ft Spire, a landmark for miles arround. So this week I paused my journey and popped inside to discover more….
I was unaware that this Christian community was formed arround 653ad by missionaries from the Northumbrian Community far to the north. I also discovered that a church was then erected on this site in 675 and this religious community has continued over the centuries in the same location.
Obviously the church we see today is not the original, like all old churches changes and additions have been made over time.
Wystan was part of the Mercian Royal Family but was murdered in 849… he is buried in the Crypt deep in the foundations of the Church (there are also two other Mercian Kings interred in the crypt)
So lets take a look arround…

Perhaps Repton is a name more associated with its Public School… but from now on, for me its is St. Wystan’s Church that is the main intertest.
(one final note: I did not visit the crypt. It is dark, access difficult and I was on my own, H&S instinct said to come back another day with a friend… as it is a Royal resting place for Mercia Kings, I think it worth the challenge)
Sunday and a new week ahead…. take care and as always…
